Abstract :
As a result of small computers becoming increasingly more powerful, there is a trend among computer users towards smaller systems. Nevertheless, large computer installations will still be needed for the foreseeable future. The reason is their increasing capacity and ability as well as the fact that it is very costly to close down an established large computer system such as one used for operations or manufacturing support. In fact, it is sometimes not even possible to do so without an unreasonable degree of effort. Consequently there will be a demand for systems with very high capacity even for the future, and the reliability demands to be followed are expected to increase. The aim of this paper is to present the system of different types of equipment needed for the power supply of a very large computer center for Televerket. The center is to be brought into service during 1987. Principles and policies which are followed at the planning of the installations are described. The paper also gives examples of problems and how solutions are chosen to create a total installation which corresponds to the future demands for high operation safety during normal operational conditions as well as on occasions of an extreme nature.
