Abstract :
The role of the SDH infrastructure in supporting ATM services is described in this paper. The ATM layer will be a client of the SDH layer. The broadband integrated services digital network (B-ISDN) can be viewed as two layers when interworking between ATM and SDH is considered. The SDH infrastructure layer will provide synchronous bandwidth pipes between the customer access points onto the SDH network and ATM edge gateway switches (EGS), and between the ATM edge gateway switches and the ATM core switches. The ATM layer will provide call switching, traffic policing and cell consolidation, and will support a range of constant bit rate services (e.g. voice), variable bit rate services (e.g. compressed video) and available bit rate data services (e.g. LAN interconnection)
