Abstract :
The article is concerned with the formation of high resolution radar images with high geometric accuracy and the registration of these images against cartographic maps or other forms of reference. The majority of the radar data has been gathered using a millimetre wave radar sensor designed to allow the application of Doppler beam sharpening (DBS) techniques. DBS processing is very similar in character to synthetic radar aperture (SAR) processing, both exploit the differential Doppler shift imparted to returning radar signals and use it to give increased angular resolution. The difference between SAR and DBS being that DBS processing is used to enhance cross-range resolution at angles around the boresight whereas SAR processing is carried out on data from a sideways looking radar
