Abstract
In recent years, Smart grid has drawn much more attention because of improving environmental consciousness and $3.4 billion funding from the Obama Administration in the United States. A reliable communication network is the core of smart grid. This paper addresses the communication demand of constructing smart grid. Various communication technologies are discussed, including wired and wireless technologies. It concludes that Passive Optical Networks (PON) technology, especially Ethernet PON, is an ideal choice for smart grid based on its features and advantages.
