Abstract
This paper discusses the fundamentals of designing and implementing an engine generator-based primary energy system for remote telecommunication sites where key elements of the system´s success are low maintenance, high reliability, and low operational cost with the lowest initial financial investment. The success of an environmentally uncontrolled cyclic prime power application, such as the one mentioned, has pushed both the monitoring and control technologies as well as the valve regulated batteries to their technological limits. By properly matching these technologies, a prime energy system can be implemented at a remote telecommunication site to meet the continuous energy demands while only running a fraction of a 24-hour period, thus providing longer engine service life and reduced operational costs. Combining remote monitoring features with this sort of system configuration has reduced power outages and has transformed reactive service emergencies into proactive system maintenance
