Abstract :
Vehicle Safety Communications (VSC) have been proposed as part of ITS development to reduce the traffic accidents by providing critical road traffic information beyond driver´s view. The system is planned to be implemented on 700MHz band in Japan, and 5.9GHz band in Europe and America. Some applications require the communication in Non-line-of-Sight (NLOS) conditions. However, the feasibility study of the communication performance in NLOS conditions is still an open issue, especially in the urban environment with the traffic flow. In this paper, we explain the differences of radio specifications among EU, USA and Japan based on the ITS standardization work carried out in each region respectively to clear the implementation method for VSC. Then we show the VSC performance results in NLOS conditions through the computer simulation, which duplicates the urban road traffic environment in Tokyo. We compare the simulation results between 5.9GHz and 700MHz bands, and conclude there are some improvements needed for 5.9GHz band to realize the NLOS VSC in the urban environment.
