Abstract :
In this paper, we propose the use of an ac-coupled burst-mode receiver in conjunction with 88108 line coding for Ethernet passive optical network (EPON). The proposed method provides a simple and low-cost scheme for burst-mode receiver design without de-coupling, while suppressing sensitivity penalty comparable to a de-coupled receiver. In addition, we analyze the effect of ac-coupling on the error rate performance of burst-mode receivers together with coding. The results suggest that the ac-coupled receiver can be a cost-effective alternative to the de-coupled receiver in EPON burst-mode applications.
