Abstract
In many advanced man-machine systems, the complexity of the process often exceeds the capability of the human or the machine to deal with certain situations. In such systems, allocation of the process tasks between the human and the machine(s) is important for successful performance. A new method for optimal task allocation and optimal information transfer is suggested. The method utilizes a new TASK-AGENT-CONTROL state space into which tasks are mapped. This space allows the application of network optimization techniques which determines the optimal allocating of the process tasks. The method has been tested in a new traveling aid for the blind called the Navbelt. In this system, task allocation is changed according to the user´s individual capabilities, and according to changes in the surroundings
