Abstract :
In January 2002, ABET, with support from the Sloan Foundation, held a colloquy to explore this issue. The primary product of the colloquy was a list of thirteen objectives that encompass the fundamental purpose of educational laboratories in engineering. This paper presents these objectives, comments on their assessment and explores whether they can be achieved through distance learning.
