Abstract
The RACE project “R2024: Broadband Access Facilities” has developed a cost effective broadband passive optical network (PON) for residential and small business customers, transmitting at a bit-rate of 622 Mbit/s in the upstream and in the downstream direction. One key aspect in the success of the project is the effectiveness of the special ATM-layer protocol developed within the project. This paper describes the protocol and its functionalities and presents some results from performance studies that have been carried out to validate the system
