Abstract
Summary form only given. An analysis of the conditions for breakeven done under the assumption that the heat losses are governed by heat transfer theory, rather than through the 3nkT//spl tau//sub E/ term, leads to the following two expressions for breakeven (/spl alpha/ particles escape), or ignition (/spl alpha/ particles retained), respectively. In conclusion, a magnetically confined plasma cannot reach breakeven or ignition.
