Abstract :
It is shown that the use of sorted colormaps makes color-mapped images amenable to both lossless and lossy compression. For lossy compression conventional wisdom dictates the use of DCT (discrete cosine transform) coding for most types of images. However, for color-mapped images DPCM (differential pulse code modulation) coding might be more advantageous
