Abstract
For channels utilizing OPPM (overlapping pulse position modulation) signaling, the authors introduce modulation codes that produce synchronizable sequences, and joint synchronization and detection algorithms that use the memory introduced by these codes to produce joint estimates of symbol boundaries and transmitted symbols. The performance of these codes shows a drastic improvement over uncoded communication when symbol synchronization is not present. Even after symbol synchronization is achieved, some of the codes still provide a significant coding gain over uncoded systems
