Abstract
An asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) technology testbed, currently under development within the European RACE 1022 project, is characterized by the separation of transport and control functions into a transport network and a control network, respectively. General concepts for an ATM target network architectural model are discussed. Emphasis is placed on the control network, and basic features for this network and for its control stations, and the solution adopted within the R1022 testbed are outlined. The ATM control adapter that allows control stations to be connected to this testbed is described in detail. It is explained how an advanced intelligent network (IN) can be introduced in the future enhanced R1022 testbed using multimedia control stations whose architecture is described
