Abstract
The StarBurst architecture is a class of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switches which can employ both dedicated buffering and shared buffering. The adopted hybrid buffering strategy provides both buffer reduction and lock-out protection. With this buffering scheme, the switch performance remains robust under bursty traffic and nonuniform traffic. The StarBurst switch is presented. It is shown that the switch capacity can achieve that of output queuing switches
