  • Abstract
Research conducted by Bell Northern Research (BNR) in the US over the past few years indicates that one major reason for the limited success of new services is the poor user interface available to subscribers. Results of this research, and the subsequent display-based telephones and services recently developed and under trial, indicate higher acceptance of display-based services delivered via extensions to current analog access. The most recent research indicates that caller identification service is the highest-valued service of those initially trialed. The inter-dependence of the telephone set and the service implementations has been shown to be very high in determining user acceptance and willingness to pay. The initial success of these new display based services indicates that service for the subscriber and revenue opportunities for the provider will soon be realized
