Abstract :
Digital radio (DR) facilities are planned to be integrated into future Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) networks. Rapid signal phase changes induced by propagation disturbances have been identified to sometimes cause burst error impairments in DR transmission. The SDH format may be more vulnerable to these error bursts than the existing plesiochronous one. Given the intermittently poor short term error performance of DR systems and the apparent susceptibility of the SDH format to error bursts, it is recommended that significant improvements in the error performance of DR transmission must be achieved before DR facilities are integrated into the future SDH network
