Abstract
This paper presents a design optimization method of IPMs with extended duration at short-time duty and improved peak power density. The peak power is improved based on optimizing the proportion of copper loss in the total losses. A transient thermal model coupled with the electromagnetic design approach are developed to examine the effect of critical design parameters. The design for 60kW IPMs with a peak power to weight ratio of over 6kW/kg and continuous power to weight ratio of 3kW/kg are presented. Experimental results show that the designs fulfill the applications effectively.
