Abstract :
The Traffic Director for London was asked by the Government Office for London to lead a small steering group to consider and demonstrate the use of cameras for bus lane enforcement. The project has the approval of Transport and Home Office ministers and the Metropolitan Police. The Traffic Director has been asked by ministers to proceed to an area scheme for the use of bus lane cameras. This paper introduces the project by briefly describing the pilot project and its findings, followed by the area scheme proposals and the preparations for its introduction which are now under way. This project has broken new ground in the use of unattended enforcement cameras by taking forward the first use of mobile (vehicle mounted) cameras for a complex offence that cannot be easily measured, their use for transport benefits, and the development of new techniques for detection and assessment
