Abstract :
This paper discusses contrasting approaches to computer use in autonomous systems brought about by the use of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques versus conventional algorithmic (ALG) methods. Issues are presented that system designers must understand and assess as part of their system development. Possible applications of AI to an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) are described as a mechanism of relating these design issues to a system development. Finally, the approach of a Martin Marietta Baltimore research project, by which the impact of design issues related to using AI in an AUV can be evaluated, is outlined.
