Abstract :
Stirling engines in underwater applications allow for considerably increased endurance in submerged position, also combined with vibrationless and silent operation of the vehicle. These qualities are most important from military point of view. Recently the Royal Swedish Navy has awarded United Stirling AB a cost sharing contract, also sponsored by SIND (The Swedish National Industrial Board), on development of an air independent propulsion system for an untethered autonomous remotely operated vehicle (AROV). SUTEC, a Swedish company specialized on development and manufacture of ROVs is, under a similar contract with the Royal Swedish Navy, responsible for development of the AROV, using the Stirling machinery. The Stirling energy system will be based on a well proven, reliable Stirling engine concept, adapted for underwater application, using high pressure oxygen combustion with a petroleum derivative, e.g. white Spirit, as a fuel. Initially a design study of the Stirling powered module, including fuel and oxygen storages, will be made for final choice of basic engine concept and type of oxygen supply system (LOX or GOX).
