Abstract :
This work in progress presentation illustrates the use of standard, structured engineering design tools for the development and improvement of an engineering curriculum. These methodologies are traditionally applied to the design of engineering systems, and make use of structured tools such as "House of Quality". The design and improvements of complex organizational systems, such as curricula, can benefit from the use of the structured methodologies in the same way as complex manufactured products. Because educators are being tasked to integrate greater use of the tools in their classroom activities, it is reasonable to take advantage of the benefits from these methodologies in other educational activities. The motivation for major curriculum development and/or redesign is presented along with challenges facing curriculum reviews. An example of a first iteration of the curriculum development process is presented along with some conclusions drawn from this application of the tools.
