Abstract
Specific problems related to large-scale integration in the communication market are discussed. It is pointed out that the influence of integrated-circuit technology in the past few years has been pervasive, in areas from consumer products to business management to manufacturing control. It is noted that, in order to survive, it is necessary to have an optimal cost efficiency for the products. This is most necessary in the field of real-time signal processing; the continuous flow of data, together with the complexity of many of the algorithms, imposes severe computational demands. An effort is made to define some key rules which will be the base for a VLSI-system integration methodology. It is concluded that the signal processor designer´s expertise is very useful for algorithm simplification; the design methodology has to be system oriented. A modular concept for the process technology has to be taken into account in order to achieve better efficiency for silicon
