Abstract :
The island of Lesvos exhibits a rugged topography and complex physiography, characterized by a particular hilly-mountainous relief. The great variety of landscape is the result of the geological dissimilarity caused by the outcrop of different petrographic types and by the tectonic activity. To gain insight into these complex morphological and geological settings of Lesvos, a Landsat 5 TM cloud-free subscene, acquired on August 20th 1989, has been analyzed after a preprocessing including radiometric and geometric corrections. The TM data set has been georeferenced to the EGSA 87 projection and resampled to a pixel size of 33 m. The discrimination of different lithologic units and geomorphic features has been carried out by processing, three at time, the six reflected bands of the TM data set by means of decorrelation stretching technique. The best result of this computation have been selected to be merged with a ERSI PRI image covering the island; thus, a thematic map has been created and compared, partially digitally, with the available geologic map
