  • Abstract
    Processes of convection and ventilation of the deep layer in the deepest lake in the world, Baikal, play a substantial role in lake ventilation and then in the whole its endemic ecosystem functioning. Temperature fronts and circulation in low stability conditions during periods of spring and autumn homothermy (when water temperature is equal to temperature of maximal density down to 200-250 m) can be very important factor of convection features. Studies of spring thermobar formation and fall circulation patterns are performed using AVHRR IR imagery. Deep convection can arise as well in river plume areas due to difference in density between lake and river waters. Coastal upwelling is a zone of vertical exchange intensification. SAR imagery produce the most detailed representation of thermal fronts. Internal seiches and baroclinic internal waves are important factor of water mixing. SAR images analysis produces new understanding of their manifestation and movement
