Abstract :
By applying image processing techniques to images from existing remote sensing systems such as LANDSAT and the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR), the authors simulate visible and IR imagery for the next generation of Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) prior to launch. The simulated imagery includes the effects of all known factors that influence image quality including: instrument pointing errors, noise, radiometric errors, and ground processing. These simulations have proved useful in evaluating system performance and for comparing different operational scenarios. Though the simulations are focussed on the GOES-I spacecraft, the techniques used and the phenomena modeled are applicable to remote sensing systems in general
