Direct observation of pulse propagation in photonic crystals

Abstract :
Femtosecond light pulses have been locally tracked en route as they propagate through a photonic crystal structure. The phase-sensitive and time-dependent measurements allow the determination of the local photonic band structure. Ultraslow light is observed.
