Abstract
The author makes specific suggestions for overcoming the resistance to change within the educational establishment and advancing the frontiers of engineering education by improving its design component. The resistance is characterized by denial of the problem, emphasis on other activities, and complacency. Specific steps are given for improving undergraduate design education and for evaluating the design components of curricula. A key element is the use of operational metrics for design education and the rejection of spurious measures that are often publicized
