Abstract
The author discusses some of the changes that industry is addressing today, based on the author´s experience as a researcher and general manager with General Electric. Changes such as integrated design and manufacture, simultaneous engineering, continuous improvement, employee empowerment and market-back research are discussed. The author also considers some of the new skills that the graduate engineer of the 1990s requires to enter the workplace, and how some of these skills can be taught in academic institutions
