Abstract :
In this work, an FIR approximation of the Al-Alaoui first order IIR differentiator is presented. The resulting FIR filter is shown to perform a good approximation of the IIR differentiator. Furthermore, it is shown to outperform other FIR approximations, obtained via windowing techniques, of the Al-Alaoui first order IIR differentiator. The obtained FIR differentiator is used to generate masks for image edge detection. The results show the superiority of the masks derived from the new FIR filter when compared to other techniques in image edge detection.
