Abstract
Summary form only given. A promising technique for optical data transmission at 40 Gbit/s and higher is to use the return-to-zero (RZ) modulation format together with dispersion management. A key parameter is the map strength, S. For map strengths of approximately 10 or lower, stable propagation of dispersion-managed (DM) solitons is possible. Recently much interest has been focused on upgrading the installed standard fiber base, which results in very high map strengths (S/spl gsim/ 40). In this work we numerically investigate the influence of the dispersion period and the pulse width on the performance of a DM transmission link.
