Abstract :
A 2.5-V, 31.5-mW, 5-GHz fully-differential RF front-end on 0.13-mum CMOS technology for 5-GHz application is presented. The RF front-end comprises of 3-bit digitally controlled variable gain low-noise amplifier (VGLNA) and 40-MHz IF down conversion mixer with a single stage IF amplifier. An inductor source degeneration LNA using current steering cascode stages is used to implement the variable gain control. A Gilbert mixer with current injection is used to reduce conversion loss and lower LO swing requirement. A single stage IF amplifier is implemented to increase the gain and output matching for 4-KOhms (differential). Measurements showed a >20-dB voltage conversion gain, 13-dB Noise figure, -6.5-dBm IIP3 and better than 20-dB input match for the RF front-end.
