Abstract
We review the main signal processing techniques for mitigation of physical impairments in optical systems (e.g. chromatic dispersion, fiber nonlinearities, polarization effects, and amplified spontaneous emission noise) and discuss some of the important issues in their design and application in the optical domain. In particular, we describe approaches based on adaptive filtering, including applications in system identification and equalization, and adaptive filter performance.
