Abstract
The authors describe the tactical data network currently deployed with the US Army as part of the mobile subscriber equipment (MSE) communications network. The MSE packet network (MPN) was designed by GTE Government Systems Corporation as an overlay extension to the US Army´s state-of-the-art MSE digital communications system. The packet switch network (PSN) overlay was implemented over the existing infrastructure without impairing the network´s voice grade of service. The MPN is currently the largest packet switched network in the world with packet switching equipment deployed throughout the tactical signal units of the Army. The authors outline the requirements of a mobile packet PSN and then provide a description of the unique functions and capabilities that the MPN provides in order to meet those requirements
