Abstract
Iron loss analysis in a linear DC motor is discussed. Two cases are considered: the motor core made of solid steel and a laminated core. Those two cases call for different methods of iron loss calculation, which are discussed in detail. Influence the magnetic bias, produced by the motor´s permanent magnet excitation, on the iron loss is discussed. Iron loss calculated for both versions of the core is compared and design recommendations are made.
