Abstract :
In this paper, the mechanisms of the magnetostructural transition in Gd5(SixGe1-x)4 giant magnetocaloric alloys were studied. The transition mechanisms were observed using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and acoustic emission (AE), showing that they are avalanche-mediated, essentially athermal, and the transitions evolve with cycling towards a reproducible pattern.
