Abstract :
Summary form only given. We propose a scheme for a parametric image amplifier consisting of a parametric medium enclosed in a confocal resonator. In a ideal confocal resonator an infinite number of transverse modes, having a definite parity with respect to the inversion of the spatial transverse coordinates, are degenerate in frequency. As a consequence we show that a confocal parametric oscillator operating below threshold is capable of amplifying a coherent optical image as a whole, provided the input image has an even (odd) distribution in the transverse plane.
