Abstract :
Artificial reefs have become an accepted means of enhancing marine recreational fishing efforts in the United States over the past twenty-five years. State and local governments, sportfishing clubs and other organizations building these reefs are facing many of the same needs in attempting to effectively maintain ongoing reef programs. Based on experience gained through managing a state-supported artificial reef program, several of the most common of these needs are identified, and the significance of each to the future development of artificial reef utilization in this country is discussed. The areas covered include: planning and management of reef programs, artificial reef research, financial support for reef programs and development and implementation of modern reef technology.
