Abstract
The Automated Code Handler for Output Operations (ACHOO) supports a methodology whereby output requirements for a computer program, and the source code for the statements to support them, are determined at execution time based on user-supplied input. Thus, the user can tailor output requirements to a specific need or scenario. The function of the programmer is reduced to instrumenting predesignated areas where potential monitoring of program behavior is desired. This activity, consisting of inserting calls to subroutines that ACHOO creates, eliminates the need for manual creation of output statements and accompanying format specifications during computer program development and subsequent maintenance. Although ACHOO currently supports Fortran programs only, this does not preclude its adaptation to other languages. During design, attempts were made to identify, isolate, and document language-dependent functions so that module substitution could occur to accommodate other languages
