Abstract
The paper examines a new approach to reduce the cell loss probability of an ATM network using interleaved error-correcting codes. In an ATM network with bursty traffic, the occurrence of cell loss is also bursty due to an instantaneous loss of cells during buffer overflow. Interleaving can reduce the burstiness and thus the cell loss probability. Computer simulations are performed using the BONeS Designer and a simple ATM network. The arrival process of the ATM network is modelled by on-off sources and Markov modulated deterministic processes (MMDP). Simulation results show that the cell loss probability can be reduced by more than 50%
