Abstract :
ATM-based LANs can provide much greater capacity than current shared medium LANs and support multimedia traffic such as audio, video, and data. The key component for an ATM LAN is an ATM adaptor for attaching a PC or workstation to an ATM switch or hub. We have made a prototype of an adaptor for ATM LANs with a data rate of 100 Mbps (ATM Forum UNI spec. V3.0). We first analyze the basic design requirements for handling ATM communication services. Based on this analysis, we then discuss the implementation issues of an ATM adaptor for the LAN environment
