Abstract
The use of permanent magnets at field levels above 1 Tesla is facing two basic problems due to the characteristics of ferromagnetic materials and the limitations imposed by the magnetization of permanent magnets. Traditional magnet design with ferromagnetic yoke cannot be used because of saturation limits, and the remanence of modern rare earth magnetic alloys is limited to a 1.5 Tesla range.
