Abstract :
Experiments have continued at the Seacoast Test Facility of the Natural Energy Laboratories of Hawaii on the Big Island of Hawaii to examine non-chemical methods for controlling biofouling in OTEC heat exchangers. Initial results have shown that ultraviolet irradiation subdues marine microbiological growth in the early stages to an effectiveness of 95+ percent. Methods to increase the ultraviolet dosage by slower flowrates, higher ultraviolet intensity, and an ultrasonic/ultraviolet tandem are being examined and will be reported later.
