Abstract :
An ATM-based broadband integrated services digital network (B-ISDN) caters for a variety of user services. The FDDI network receives traffic from these services through the connectionless server (CLS) within the ATM-based B-ISDN. The synchronous traffic has critical delivery time constraints and has higher priority over asynchronous traffic. Furthermore, the latter has multiple priority levels coming from, the different services. When higher priority traffic is given priority over lower priority traffic, as in a static priority scheme, there is always a problem of starvation and poor performance for lower priority classes. A model is used to evaluate the performance of the FDDI-ATM gateway. We propose that the system employs a dynamic priority scheme by adjusting relative priorities of packets according to their maximum limits of mean waiting time. An analysis of the performance of an FDDI-ATM gateway supporting multi-class traffic is presented. By dynamically adjusting the priority of each class of traffic using a priority improvement scheme (PIS), the policy effectively regulates the multi-class user´s traffic and maintains trade-off between network load and mean waiting time (MWT) for different classes
