Abstract
The digital radio channel is investigated for uncoded and trellis-coded data transmission. The receiver uses a detector having memory. The Viterbi algorithm is optimum for the search of the most likely transmitted sequence. The authors apply a suboptimum procedure called the M -algorithm (MA). The MA uses a sorting breadth-first strategy and pursues only the M most likely data sequences. Simulation results are presented for uncoded/coded 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM)/32-CROSS and 64-QAM/128-CROSS modulation types. The bit error rate and the signature were taken as the evaluation criteria
