  • Abstract
In this paper, several problems concerning the protection of mobile base stations against harmful effects from lightning discharge are discussed. The paper give some novel research work, which are the modeling of lightning discharges through antenna tower and grounding system, include the models of the step leader radiation, the return stroke and the vertical transmission line, the discharge when the lightening striking the antenna tower, the antenna tower and the grounding system of the antenna tower. Some discussions concerning the calculations of lightening discharge circuit parameters and the harmful effects when discharging directly to the antenna tower and the protection engineering of mobile base stations against harmful effects from lightning discharge are also made. In addition, some suggestions about how to achieve compliance with the IEC requirements are also given.
