Abstract
Comparisons are made between MIL-STD-461 and various regulations and standards affecting commercial and consumer equipment. The discussion covers US Federal Communications Commission requirements, Society of Automotive Engineers standards, ANSI C63.12 on electromagnetic compatibility in commercial/consumer electronic equipment, and other industry standards. Ramifications of some of these comparisons are discussed. A case history is given to show that some low-cost consumer equipment can be used by the military if it is designed properly and passes industry tests including those for electrostatic discharge and power-line transients
