Abstract
In this study, the operation principle of an optical directional coupler, which is one of the fundamental elements of an optical communication system, is analyzed. The power loss profile of a coupler is determined by considering characteristic properties of transmitted guided modes. The analysis shows that the losses due to inter-TE-modes coupling are higher than those due to inter-TM-modes coupling.
