Abstract :
This paper reviews the available mammalian toxicity data on tributyltin (TBT) compounds and gives an evaluation of the risk for man due to contact with TBT´s. Since TBT compounds can produce severe irritation of the skin and mucous membranes, contact of the skin and eyes as well as inhalation of spray mist or dust must be prevented. TBT vapours are not considered hazardous. In repeated dose studies lymphotoxicity and hepatobiliary toxicity were the predominant findings. There was no evidence of a damage to the central nervous system. From the available data it is concluded that TBT´s do not represent a mutagenic, teratogenic or carcinogenic hazard to humans. Recommendations on the medical surveillance of workers and a provisional Acceptable Daily Intake are given.
