Introduction

Welcome to the IEEE Lester Eastman Conference on High Performance Devices. This conference emphasizes new and emerging technologies concentrating on compound semiconductors and high speed electronic and opto-electronic physics, devices, and applications. It is gratifying to see this conference evolve from its beginning in the mid-1960´s, focusing on one or two specific material phenomena, to a broader range of materials and device physics. This year´s conference focuses on Terahertz Technology, High Speed Devices, Infrared Photonics, Green Photonic Technology, Power Conversion, Switching and Transmission, and Next Generation Devices. It is divided into seven sessions with panel discussions to summarize each section. The panels of experts provide comments on the papers, present their own views on the subjects, and have open discussions with the audience.
